US Air Force Announces Start of Five-Year Review The 673d Air Base Wing at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) announces the beginning of the United States Air Force's Five-Year Review of cleanup remedies implemented at eleven (11) Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) sites on JBER-Elmendorf. A Five-Year Review is required by CERCLA Section 121(c) and the National Contingency Plan at 40 CFR § 300.430(f)(4)(ii) because hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants remain onsite above levels that allow for unlimited use and unrestricted exposure. The purpose of the Five-Year Review is to evaluate whether the remedies selected to clean up contaminated sites are operating as designed and continue to remain protective of human health and the environment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation also are participating in this review. The eleven sites addressed in this Five-Year Review include Operable Units 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6, and Site DP098. Historical military operations at these sites resulted in releases of petroleum and solvents to soil and groundwater. Selected remedies implemented at these sites included source removal, monitored natural attenuation and land use controls to limit exposure. Detailed information concerning JBER cleanup efforts is available in the information repository at: Alaska Resources Library & Information Services University of Alaska, Anchorage Consortium Library 3211 Providence Drive (907) 786-1871 JBER Official Website https://www.jber.jb.mil/Services-Resources/Environmental/ The findings of the Five-Year Review will be placed in the information repository. Interested persons can participate in the Five-Year Review process through May 06, 2023 by responding to a questionnaire available from: Neil Robertson, Stantec, Inc. 725 East Fireweed Lane Suite 200 Anchorage, AK 99503 neil.robertson@stantec.com (907) 266-1116 Information on the JBER-Elmendorf cleanup process is distributed to interested persons through periodic JBER Environmental Restoration Program Fact Sheets.
